Hi! I am taking a break on the Baby-sitters club, and l will start doing them again in April. I hope you enjoy this book review on The Polka Dot Shop!
Author- Laurel Remington
Genre- Fiction
Theme- Persistence
Please comment and provide some ideas that you would like for the above list. I thought of theme (but if you do not have an idea, you do not have to comment).
This book is about how Andy (she is actually a girl, Andy is short for Andrea) does not like vintage clothes. However, Andy's mum owns an op shop with pre-loved, pre-owned clothes. Everything Andy's mum wears is
NEVER a
lmost never new. Andy barely got anything new, she only got new clothes that were sent by Aunt Linda (Aunt Linda lives in a different state to Andy and her mum). To make matters worse her dad died a long, long time ago so Andy's mum (Eliza) can not do anything else except for running her op shop and falls into depression. By the way the shop is named Eliza's Emporium. Then Andy's (Andrea if you forget she is a girl) school announced that the school is not going to have uniforms anymore! Andy (Andrea) gets scared because all her clothes are pre-owned and pre-loved and her school uniform was basically ger protection from her mums store. During that time Andy's friends, started being mean to Andy and in the book Andy's "Friends" were called Fashion police, you either got a thumbs up πor thumbs down π. But everything changes when she finds a designers bag, in the back of Eliza's Emporium and everything starts to change at last.
Sorry l know that was a very long paragraph, but lets get started on the star rating!
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars ⛦ because Andy NEVER gave up on transforming the Emporium, well most of the time she does not give up anyway. That is also the reason l gave this book the theme of persistence.
The question of the blog is ... if you got to decorate/redesign the Emporium what would it look like? I personally think I would start by getting rid of everything and painting the walls white and start from there.
Hope you enjoyed this post! Love-bookworm blog π

Hi Bookworm,
ReplyDeleteI remember getting teased in primary school because I didn't have expensive runners like Reeboks or Nikes (we didn't have school uniforms at my primary school). It's not the same scenario as not getting new clothes, but I can relate to how Andy must have felt about getting thumbs up or down. Now that I am older, I think it's funny getting teased about such silly things. I know now that there is no value in paying for expensive branded clothing.
I think it's great to recycle clothes because throwing them away when they can still be worn is very wasteful and not good for the environment.
It's great that the book touches on mental health and depression. It's so sad that Andy's dad died.
A great book review choice. I like the list you created re genre, etc. Perhaps could add target audience? Look forward to your next post :)
Hi! Being teased is not very nice at all. And maybe even when clothes do not fit you any more you vould give them to homeless people. This book teaches you alot of things so it is very enjoyable! I will try and remember to add target audience!

Hello! Another great review. It sounds like a topic that many people can relate to. I also remember getting teased in high school because my clothes were not expensive or the "right" brands. If people really care so much about that sort of thing and are unkind about it, I think it's pretty shallow and silly. I love going to vintage and op shops to find new clothes because you can find something original and stylish. Plus it's good for the environment and you can save money. You can then invest that time and money into things that really matter like improving your mind, being creative and helping others.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to answer your question - I would have a pop up stand at my vintage/op shop where people could buy cupcakes or other fun treats. I would also build a stage so you can have musicians play inside the store. That way it would attract more customers to shop there and buy things.
DeleteHi! I also think it is silly to buy expensive clothes when you actually can buy more usefull things like books and food.

Hi Bookworm: It is such an excellent story: people are being manipulated by the fashion designers. Anyway, looking good required no expensive label cloths, but how we presenting ourselves .
ReplyDeleteBy the way , each seasons, I upgrade my wardrobe by Op Shops !!
fashion can be fun and away of expressing yourself. I think it's far more interesting though when people either make their own clothes or spent more time trying to cultivate a unique style by going to vintage and second hand shops.
DeleteHi! How you represent yourself and express your self is how we look not what we wear. And occasionally you can treat yourself to brand new clothes! Just not all the time.

Fashion is a way of expressing yourrself! But sometime it is more fun and enjoyable making your own clothing. But sometimes if you look a little deeper and dig through a bit a lot of the time there are hidden gems!
